VOCAL ATTACK ON TOUR
A bad cold is the one thing that always sharp-shoots my voice down like a flying duck during the peak of its hunting season. While on a European tour this past week, I came down with a horrible cold that began as what felt like a small lump in my throat. Within 24 hours, my head was clicking like a metronome, my throat was tighter than a snare drum, I was coughing vigorously, my range lowered its standards and my falsetto had checked out. I didn’t know what I was going to do with a sound check followed by a 60-minute set to prepare for in just 12 hours. To this day, there’s not a single flavor of tea, vocal technique or home remedy that can convince my voice to come out and play again once it’s been attacked by a cold. The easiest notes for me to sing on a regular day feel like heavy-lifting after a virus’ full day of hard work on my throat. I decided to do something I’d never done – drink water until I couldn’t bare to swallow it anymore and sleep for all 12 of the hours I had to spare before the show. I also downed multiple cups of vitamin C with hot water (cringing with every swallow). Surprisingly, the treatment kept the condition of my voice from worsening; it reached all the notes it was responsible for last night. Tomorrow is a different story. As disgusting as this vitamin C may be, it may be my only hope. Here’s to vocal health!
